How It Started

Our Story

Gray Feather CFO didn’t begin with a business plan. It began with an unexpected layoff delivered just days before Kevin’s birthday.

After nearly five years of value-added leadership, including a promotion from Controller to CFO, Kevin suddenly found himself at a crossroads. Rather than dwell on the setback, Kevin turned it into momentum. Within days, he launched a Fractional CFO firm as a birthday wish on his 39th birthday.

The company began as Blue Heron Financial Services, a nod to the majestic birds flying along Bear Creek, where Kevin often found clarity on long walks. The heron had always been a kind of spirit animal: solitary, observant, and quietly powerful. Alas, that name didn’t last long. After a quick lesson in intellectual property law, the firm was rebranded as Gray Feather CFO.

We still celebrate the company’s birthday every year, as a reminder that the best companies aren’t built under perfect conditions. They’re built through resilience, grit, and determination.
